Do you love the Disney Pixar movie Ratatouille? Well, then you will want to tune into Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical! Born on the hit social media app during the coronavirus quarantine, the musical will now go to Broadway for one night! Read on to see how you can watch it from the comfort of your own home…
Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical
While Disney has produced Broadway musicals of some of its biggest films, like Beauty and the Beast and Frozen, Oscar-winning Ratatouille never recieved such treatment. Now, however, a few dedicated TikTok users plan to change that! It all started with one little video by user Emily Jacobsen (@e_jaccs). She uploaded a single song that she wrote, “Ode to Remy,” about the film’s main character. Immediately, many users noticed how utterly fantastic the song was. Before long, composer and arranger Daniel Mertzlufft took inspiration from other Disney musicals and wrote an orchestral backing for the song. From there, things only snowballed…
Inspired by “Ode to Remy,” hundreds of Broadway actors, composers, set designers, choreographers, costume makers, and many more worked hard to build songs, props, costumes, and scenes for the, until recently, fictional show. After all, they had little else to do! Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus, Broadway theaters have been completely shut down.
Of course, their hard work did not go unnoticed. Little did these Tiktok users know, Broadway production giant Seaview Productions were watching from the wings. Now, Seaview has announced it will present a one-night-only live stream of a fully-produced version of Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical, to help fund the Actor’s Fund. The Actor’s Fund is a non-profit to help actors and other creators in times of need, like this year. Now, TikTok is abuzz with what the musical will look like…
From Social Media to Broadway
Although it’s not clear what the actual show will look like, Seaview Productions has brought together some of the best minds on Broadway to make Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical happen. As stated in the press release, Seaview plans to “celebrate the delectable crowd-sourced creation by giving it the full high-kicking, lip-smacking Broadway treatment.” To make sure this happens, the production company has hired Lucy Moss as director and Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley as writers to bring it all together. While not every song created can appear in the musical, they are working with Jacobsen and Blake Rouse, two of the most prominent minds behind the musical on TikTok.
Sadly, it does not seem like Disney has any plans to allow the musical to continue for more than one night. “Although we do not have development plans for the title, we love when our fans engage with Disney stories. We applaud and thank all of the online theatre makers for helping to benefit The Actors Fund in this unprecedented time of need,” a Disney representative stated.
If you’re excited for Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical, you can check it out at the start of 2021. It will stream on the service TodayFix on January 1st. You can pay anything more than $5 for a ticket, and it will go to The Actor’s Fund! After the premiere, it will remain on the streaming service for three days.
