Ghostbusters (2016), Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig – $75 Million Lost
There are varying opinions on why the all-female reboot of Ghostbusters became one of the biggest box office bombs of all time. If you ask critics and audiences, they would tell you that the movie simply failed to bring anything new to the table. As a result, audiences stayed away from Ghostbusters. After all, movies are expensive these days – no reason to go out and see something boring!
However, director Paul Feig has blamed everything from sexism to the 2016 election for Ghostbusters‘ failure. Meanwhile, remake producer and star of the original Dan Aykroyd put the blame squarely on Fieg’s shoulders, saying “he will not be back on the Sony [back]lot anytime soon.” Ouch! Regardless of who’s to blame, the 2016 reboot of Ghostbusters lost Sony a whopping $75 million.
