Few ever become lucky enough to win the lottery. Even worse, sometimes, those who win genuinely do not deserve it. However, sometimes, fortune favors those who need it the most! The couple in this tale truly deserved to win the Powerball jackpot, thanks to their whopping 21 grandchildren!
On Their Way To The Victory
Phillip Chippewa’s story starts off quite casual but quickly becomes incredible. One day in September, Chippewa bought a lottery ticket at Barrels & Barrels Party Store in Suttons Bay, Michigan. While the grandfather doesn’t gamble very often, he does like picking up a few tickets every now and again.
“Any time I see the jackpot getting up there, I buy a few tickets and hope for the best,” said Chippewa. “I stopped at Barrels & Barrels the day of the drawing and almost walked out without buying the tickets, but at the last minute, I decided to get four plays.” As it would turn out, that was money well spent! The grandad of 21 grandchildren matched all five numbers later that night, as well as the Powerball!
Snagging The Powerball Jackpot
Thanks to the Powerball, Chippewa won $80,000,00, around $42 million after tax withholdings. This is one of the biggest wins, ever. In fact, Chippewa is only the fourth lottery player from Michigan to win the game in almost nine years! After considering their options, Phillip Chippewa and his wife Dawn gathered their whole family to collect the winnings at the Michigan Lottery Headquarters.
Chippewa explained that he and his family are very, very close. Their family consists of the couple, their seven children and 21 grandchildren! “With 21 grandchildren, I’ve always said that I might not have the most money, but I am rich with family. Now, I have all the money I’ll ever need and can help my family for generations. That means everything to me.”
Humble Plans
While many of us would probably buy a house or travel the world after a lotto win, Chippewa is far more humble. His plans include buying homes for each of his children and him with his wife. After that, he will still share his money with everyone in the family, also paying for college tuition and bills. As for personal goals, Chippewa wants a new Harley Davidson motorcycle and white Dodge Challenger for a starter.
Financial advisors ask lottery winners not to make rash decisions or quit their jobs. Often, they spend their money far too quickly. But we think we don’t have to worry for our Michigan winner as his outlook is a little different. “Every day when I come to work, my boss asks me: ‘Why are you here?’ I just tell him that I was hired to do a job, and I’m not going to abandon anyone just because I won. We’ll retire in time, but we believe in being good to the community that has been so good to us.”
