Everyone loves donuts! From glazed to chocolate frosted, everyone has their favorite, and plenty would pay a fortune to have unlimited Krispy Kremes or Dunkin’ Donuts. However, one customer went above and beyond for his local bakery. He spent over $1,000 on a single donut, saving the bakery from closing!
Donut That Costs A Fortune
During the current coronavirus pandemic, many businesses are struggling. Thankfully, Tremont Goodie Shop in Upper Arlington, Ohio, had one particular customer looking out for it. That customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, has visited the Tremont Goodie Shop weekly for over 50 years. When he learned that the bakery could possibly close, the loyal customer did the unthinkable: he plopped down $1,000 for a single donut! “He called and asked us if he would be able to give us $1,000 for his donut,” Emilie Smith, the manager of the family-owned bakery said. ““I got choked up. He asked again ‘would that be ok?’ because there was silence on the line. I choke out, ‘yes, of course, it would be ok!’ I never expected that.”
While the customer wishes to remain anonymous, he didn’t stop the bakery from sharing the good news online. “We are in tears. This is a custard donut for $1,000 to help keep us in business. What a blessing,” they wrote on their official Facebook page. Along with the post, the Goodie Shop also included a picture showing the custard-filled donut in a small bag with a heart drawn on it.
Sweet Blessing
Believe it or not, this is not the first time this customer has helped out the Tremont Goodie Shop. In the past, their precious customer brought the employees snacks and pizza when he was in a particularly good mood. Unfortunately, as of late, the customer hasn’t come into the bakery as often, as his doctor has told him to cut more sweets out of his diet. However, when he heard his favorite bakery was only pulling in about 1/3rd of their regular income, due to the coronavirus, he knew he needed to head back. Of course, the bakery did not even know how to begin thanking their favorite customer. “He said ‘I really needed to support you.’ He’s the kind of guy that just lights up the room when he’s here,” Smith said, speaking of the mystery customer.
After the story went viral, readers from around the world voiced their support for the unknown donor. “That is absolutely amazing! I am so grateful for folks who can do something like that. Can’t think of a better business to support!” one said. “Love this! We will be making our weekly order again this week. Just ate our last soft chocolate cookie,” another Goodie Shop regular wrote on the post.
Of course, the viral story also helped the Tremont Goodie Shop’s sales. After the story hit the internet, the shop reported an influx of orders from regulars and newbies alike. “This morning we could barely keep up with phone calls! And someone left a $100 tip for the employees,” she said. “It’s truly been such a blessing.” So, in his own way, this mystery customer has continued to help the bakery, even after his $1,000 donut.
